I would suggest them in this order:
    – Mullard
    – Tungsol
    – Groove Tubes Gold
    – Ruby Tubes

I have personally used Ruby Tubes in mine but understand that’s not most’s preference in regards to tube. I like the Ruby’s because they are mellow, and warm… very lush and musical to me with nice harmonics. Some are more neutral and sterile sounding, which many prefer…. you’d have yo consider all of this. I recently ordered a slew of other tubes including all the ones mentioned above. I look forward to experimenting with them all, but can conclude that I’ve been happy with the Ruby tubes switch.

EDIT: I should say…. Ruby is a matching kinda private labeling like service…. and the ones I ended up with were JJ’s 12AX7’s. Some of theirs I have are actually Chinese makes and other Soviet.

OP: it’s almost like you’ve posted your concept without ever hearing of EHX’s 2880 Multi-Track Looper?
EHX does make a Looper pedal, and trust me, the 2880 absolutely crushes all of the other manufacturers models you referenced to. I have compared them all (owning most) and NOTHING compares to the 2880 in regards to intuitiveness, sound quality, build quality and creative companionship. They only thing it is lacking is an internal memory bank for songs…. but unlike the other models you mentioned, the 2880 accommodates up to 2GB CF cards which is like hours of recording. Then, you can pull them right out and back them up on your computer, not to mention be listening to WAV file Mix down files of the loops you created (my iTunes has about 100 songs from my 2880 on it). I wouldn’t trade the removable memory concept for any other and assume it was a decision to use CF with better judgment.

I’m sorry for sounding so harsh, but I wouldn’t even spit on the other models you mentioned after using the 2880 for a while now. I own the Zvex Loop Junky which is a brilliant pedal for what it does, but really it’s a niche, gimmick pedal that specializes in degrading the signal to lo-fi.

I would summarize by saying…. yeah, you had a nice conceptual checklist going, but have apparently, completely overlooked the 2880.

Hey, WOW thanks a ton for the compliments. I was just playing around.

temporary: yeah, it’s all original… but I’ll take that as a compliment (if you don’t mind). It’s also why I decided to date it as well… since I’m putting it out there to who knows who.

I’ll try to do more in the near future and see if I can create more complete song / mix.

Really cool effect and nice vid…. unfortunately, as thorough as you explained I got lost about mid way through. Doesn’t help that I’m completely MIDI ignorant. I think I need to start experimenting with the midi functions too, seriously. That was really cool though. How was it changing speeds… changing tempo via midi or just happened naturally as you strummed at awkward times?

    The Award/Session ‘Sessionmaster’ JD-10

    http://www.award-session.com/jd10.html

….this handy box is something I couldn’t do without and it can serve many different functions, firstly the most amp-like overdrive/distortion you will ever hear from a box, with 2 settings for classic and rock. classic will take you from clean to crunch and rock will go from crunch to metal… very handy if you are borrowing backline, it also has a 3 band EQ…handy for tweeking your sound to a specific venue or guitar, turn the G12T speaker simulation on and it makes a great direct recording box which you can run pedals into …even boosts act like they would with an amp…..and in the event of amp failure you could run direct to desk……amazingly the unit will run on almost any AC adapter positive or negative with an output between 9 and 30v…and it will run for ages on a standard 9v too, so you’ll never be stuck to power it either……it’s a brilliant little box and probably the best £40 I’ve ever spent (used price) it’s such a handy thing to have around and it’s built to an amazing quality.

p.s. is you think solid state amps can’t sound as full and rich as a valve amp check out an award/session ‘sessionette’ amp…..you will be amazed.

Got day’um, you should get paid for all of that hype! I think you about covered it!
But, would you use it out in front of your true amp too (as a drive for example or tone thickener) or is it reserved for only as needed, as an alt. solid state power-pedal? It does look really nice, especially at the price!

My friend has the same “Empress” pedals as you. I’ve spent some time with them. They are really nice. The “SuperDelay” is Super intense. That thing has so many features, it’s insane….. but lovely!

thank you for your fast answer – I never changer the CF cart EHX sent with my unit, and I should have bought another one from the start.

the pb is, I have a new macbook, running on leopard – this new OS will format CF cards ONLY on fat 32, there is no choice – I just formated mine to fix it, but it’s now on fat32, so it does not work anybetter :-/
I wonder, how can I be sure, when I purchase a new CF card, if it’s in fat16 or in fat32?

The worst thing is that I won’t be able to buy any card before monday morning – everything is closed in France on sundays… 36 hours to wait before playing again…

99% chance it’s a bad (failed) card…. formating or not. Mine completely bonked out (too). You can format it to any option you’d need even with a Mac… I did. But, it’s likely that the card could have failed. They have their format recommendations, but I’m not so sure that it’d matter if it’s FAT 16 or FAT32…. or anything else for that matter. Aside from my failed OEM card, I’ve had no problems with any others no matter how they were formated.

    Good luck! and fuuck Sundays!

VERY NICE!!!! Lucky find, I’d say. Was that all straight signal through the amp or any drive from pedals? Does it do “cleans”? What a rare find ….. and the vibrato even works!

2880 is my very best friend, I’m mostly using it for electronic music producing, live sampling, soundscapes. Last night i came to some ideas about it, take a look:

    • 8 mono channels of audio

    • Independent OCTAVE UP & OCTAVE DOWN function for each channel (at the same time Master Octave should remain )

    • Independent REVERSE function for each channel (or even PLAY MODE button: play backward, play forward<->backward, one shot playback )

    • Individual outs for each channel

    • SCENES “<" & ">” buttons. By “Scenes” I mean the possibility to keep not only one loop in memory, but for example 8 of them, and the possibility to switch between them without stopping the playback. It’s like to have “patterns” or “sequences” in a world of drum machines and sequencers. It would be killer feature

This way it could be not just a looper but a powerful experimental music production center with no analogs in history & no limits for creativity. At the same time the machine will be still extremely easy to use, and keep its special sound quality which i like and appreciate. And i see there’s enough space on the panel for such features, so the box could keep the same portable size.

Hey EHX, what do you think? Could it ever be done?

I like those thoughts, I really do…. but I think they’re a little too far fetched. Part of the appeal of the 2880 to me is that is so compact and straight forward. It has a very raw layout and feel to it. If you double the channels and add an individual out for them, and even add individual mods. per channel, that would be a hell’ov’a large unit. I’m not being sarchastic here but to consider the cost of an EHX unit like that, you’d be better off buying a laptop and running Ableton Live or something.

The “Scenes” idea seems very cool and do’able. And I would like the option of individual outs per channel (w/ the existing 4) along with a L/R option. That would be very helpful to run each out into a switcher pedal for instant queing of each channel.
