I once tried out the Danelectro Swami, having heard it made some sitar-like sounds. No comment. Recently I bought a vintage re-issue Ampeg Scrambler. During a session I hooked it up to a Fender Stratocaster, then in to the EHX #1 Echo through a Vox amp. I was amazed at getting a sitar-type sound which was very pleasing.

So, since we are up for ideas, I think it would be nice to have an EHX pedal named The Enchanter.
The Enchanter would enchant the player and the listener by enhancing the mantra and raga type sounds guitars sometimes approach, depending on the way they are played of course.

Oriental scales would take on a new life with the Enchanter.

Ooooh i would love a pedal that would make convincing sitar sounds! And if there is anyone who could do it, it is probably EHX!

Ah Ha! Very interesting, Fender&EHX4ever;, but this gentleman does not look at all Indian to me, not at all at all. More…English. And thanks for the photo!
Meanwhile I see that at least one person has been honest enough to vote “totally boring”. (Now it is two, I see) Yes, Dreamhunter, I also reckon EHX could do a good job on this. And this morning I decided to get one custom made as an Enchanter prototype. I will start on the basics myself then get a couple of pedal techies I know to help design it.

    ….Just a minute…that guy in the picture is wearing a Ram’s Horn!

You have a movie to watch, my friend.

And yes, this is a great idea and EHX could nail it.

I might recommend that you look up the Jawari circuit designed by Tim Escobedo…It’s mad simple, and sounds pretty good.

if EHX made a pedal that mimics the sound of a sitar I would be all over it like white on rice.

that would be very cool….I wonder if it could be based on some type of MULTI freq. ana. type thing

Yes, coupled with a resonance filter bringing out the harmonics and overtones.

When I want my guitar to sound like a sitar, I tune it CCCCCC

    Try tuning to DGDGGD
Just add Holy Grail and pow! Instant Karma (excuse the pun)

Yes, one way is tuning for sure. The Enchanter would not fix the tuning on the guitar, needless to say, but would synthesize the typical drone, harmonics and resonance characteristics of a sitar, and thus enhance the experience and atmosphere created by the player.

I think a compressor/sustainer for the drone notes would be good too.

A resonant filter would probably do some good, but it would be hard without hexophonic pickups to properly duplicate a sitar, at least with the filter approach. Or, you could just go monophonic analog goodness.

    Also: CGCGCC=Win.

Right, I think I am going to start twiddling the trim pots on one of my Electric Mistresses, do the same with my Small Stone and then get hold of a Soul Preacher and experiment with that. Afterwards, depending on what is going in the right direction, I will start combining them.
And I will soon be back in the studio where an Ampeg Scrambler is waiting and I will see if I am able to get a more precise “sitar” effect this time, and start noting pot positions.
