My new Synth 9 just arrived and my first impression is that it’s _very_ noisy compared to the other 9s that I’ve got (B9,C9 and Key9).

With the Synth 9 as the only pedal, when the guitar is not playing, with just a bit of body tap to ring the strings a little, there is a low rumbling / digital / distorted sound – after a while, it’s like the ‘internal sound gate’ kicks in and it’s silent. When my hand lightly touch the string with the intention to mute the string ringing – a single shot rumbling sound came back – subsequent light tap on the string produce this sound once more.

Running this same setup with my B9 – even if I tap strongly on the guitar body – I only heard a very very soft (barely can be heard) string ringing effect. Once I play, the organ sound is played cleanly much like the Promo Video sound quality.

Seems like the Synth 9 is too sensitive. It did not sound as clean as the Synth 9 promo video. While my other B9,C9 and Key 9 seems to know when a note is actually being played and filtering out noises (scratching, light finger tap, etc..) this new Synth 9 seems to try to make a synth sound out of everything.

EDIT : Any Synth 9 owner care to chip in , if this is normal or not ?

It has a built in compressor so please make sure you do NOT use a compressor after the Synth9.
Also the preset solo synth has a synth mixed with a massive fuzztone distorted guitar. That will Always be noisy as that is the way it is.
I played the demo and it is as clean here as it was when I recorded it.
Not sure but it may be your system? Is your amp set clean?

    Thank you for the reply.

I think Synth 9 is more sensitive to finger noise and tap than the other 9s. I’ve been comparing them by swapping in / out – with the 9 as the only pedal.

For example, the same finger noise / tap / or slight string ringing – if running it via C9, the noise is still there, but very slightly that it didn’t bothers, whereas on the Synth 9 (with the explanation of a built in compressor) the slight noise is now about the same loudness as an actual (soft) note.

So, will it improve the Synth 9 if I put a gate pedal as the first pedal, then the Synth 9 ?

The Compressor was added to the synth9 as people complained the C9/B9 had to wide of a dynamic range.
The compressor smooths this out and makes it easier to play.
1rst turn your guitar volume down a little and see if that helps.
Not sure if a gate will do it but will quiet your guitar down if you make a lot of finger noises when you play.

Synth 9 with a gate definitely works better. Careful body / hand movement will not trigger Synth 9 now. Much more playable overall.

May I add, I play finger style (extra finger noise?) on top of an Ibanez RG9 (9 strings – modified with 3 real bass string gauge) ..probably with added bass rumbling, instead of simply string ringing.

Note : I’m aware of the limit of low range the ‘9’s may be able to process. I’m using the ‘9’s to play regular guitar range while ditto looping over some bass/chords progression.

hmmmm I has the SYNTH 9 pedal on pre-order but have never been able to really dial it in.

I primarily wanted to play mini moog sounding runs but it just don’t really work me.

I have tried it in the front of my pedal chain [into a 5150 head/cab] at the end of the pedal chain and direct – GTR—-> SYNTH 9—-> AMP

    Any thoughts?

With the mini Moog glide sound you HAVE to pick each note so it knows when to glide.
Amp must be set clean to sound as it was designed to sound like.
I have no problem playing it but you must pick.
