I’m looking for a simple ef and I’ve narrowed it down to the Bassballs and the Doctor Q. I’m wondering which one I’d get more use out of. It’d be for guitar, however I’m not confined by any one genre or style. I’m basically asking… which pedal would be cooler to have?

Is there anywhere you can try both? They are pretty similar pedals in terms of function

sadly, no ha. i have two guitar center’s near me and neither of them really carry too much ehx at all. there are a few shops around too, but none of them have any ehx either. i’ve watched all the videos on youtube of each, and still can’t really decide. the doctor q seems a bit more subtle and usable, however the bassballs seems a lot more interesting and fun. so i’m really stuck, haha.

I’ve never played the Dr. Q, but here’s how I’d think about it:

Bassballs is really over the top, and I’m going to either love it or hate it.
Dr. Q is more subtle so I’m either going to like it, or wish it was more over the top.

Those are very good points. I’m thinking I wasn’t really looking for something that subtle, but something that wasn’t the typical ef. In that case, I’ll go for Bassballs because I sold my Worm due to that I felt all it had to offer was very subtle. Plus, the Bassballs seems like I’ll spend hours playing with it, and I usually don’t hate anything considered over-the-top, which seems to be the reason I enjoy EHX so much. Your insight has been appriciated. Thanks!

By the way, I’m digging your band. Surf City Narlins is a cool track… sorta reminds me of some Drive Like Jehu. Ever come by Philly?

oooh, a Drive Like Jehu comparison! Thank you!

Well that band unfortunately is on hiatus. It’s a shame because we never got to record some of our later songs that were honestly better.

I’ve actually never been to Philly. The drummer from that band has, his girlfriend goes to school there. Knowing me, I’d probably get into a fight over hockey if I ever went there!

Haha, I never really hear too much about hockey when in the city. However, I don’t go around looking for it haha. There are a lot of great venues, and a lot of great bands come through pretty often. But I’m sure it’s the same in Pittsburgh. That’s too bad your band is on hiatus though.

Yes, Julian, I agree. Each time I start using my Dr.Q (vintage) I end up tweaking the trim pots inside to get the sound more “out there”, then when I am satisfied I put the Dr.Q away until the next time. This has never happened with my Bassballs (vintage) which is really inspiring, especially on the deeper keys of the Electravibe.
