can i ask a bit a daft question
ive been playing for about 5 years now and gig reguarly

    ive never used a compressor

ive read a lot of things saying it will improve your tone even help shape your sound better n bits n bobs you know ? and will make things sound much better

the question is do i need one ?
i like my tone n sound i have atm
i use various numbers of pedals and what not and the sound from my amp i like too

but with a compressor will this enhance it, i spose ill have to try one and stuff to decide i just wondered if you guys could be of any advice / help please !!!

    my rig consists of

marshall avt150 head, clean setting, gain 1-3, volume full, bass 10-2 treble 10-2, mids-10-3 (they change occasionally)
    presence 0-12
n master volume changes all the time depending where im playing

the reason my gain is so low on amp clean channel is that when it used to be at 12 if i engaged some of my pedals it was a bit fuzzy like mega bassey
so i read a thing on a boss site that said it get the ultimate clean tone and tbh i am very impressed
all my pedals sound s**t hot now

I’m thinking about getting a compressor sometime myself.

Some other forumites use them very well, though I’d like how to use it as an effect and a tone shaper instead of just having it be an always on sort of thing.

I got a Boss Compressor for Christmas and sold it two days later. I honestly thought it was an effect I would never use. Then I started jamming with my cousin (he’s an old school blues/rock guy who’s in his mid-50s and has been playing since he was 6) and the only thing he uses is a distortion and a compressor. His tone is amazing and he provides me with lots of sound advice so I listened to all his talk about compressors but still wasn’t sold. Then I was modding some of his pedals and I did the vintage mod on his Dynacomp and wow. I started playing my strat on the 4th position (out of phase neck-bridge) and I really dug the sound. So I played around with it more and kind of liked it. So then I was online and saw the Rocktron Big Crush for $20 and was like how can I pass that up. I like it a lot and use it almost all the time now. The two things I love about it are it just makes your playing sound smoother and your dynamics are more noticeable but the biggest thing is harmonic feedback!!! It seems like now with my compressor and distortion dialed right I can get that beautiful singing distortion/feedback that I was seeking (this is what my cousin was always talking about). Many people think you have to blast volume/gain and stand near an amp to get but with a compressor and distortion dialed in, it’s easy to obtain at bedroom levels. Compressors are mostly used in country and funk, so it’s all personal preference but I have enjoyed mine.

I can’t live without one. Just got rid of my Dyna Comp to buy a Soul Preacher, because of the attack control.

If you can get a black finger get one, its a fab pedal and im still exploring what its capable of. I use mine in lots of musical situations, boost for lead it is fantastic and yes you get that controlled feedback. Also for rhythm work it can make your guitar really pecussive. Well worth investigating

i play lead guitar in my band, were sorta based around kasabian, the arctic monkeys, with a bit of unique sound added to it, so i use a fair bit of overdrive a lot of the time, not too much cranked gain but enough so which compressor would work well with this ??

cause i know some are good with gain and others bad etc

Well, I can only say the black finger as that’s what I use. It has three types of compression and these parameter’s are adjustable, best to check the spec under ‘effect pedals’ on this site, there you will find all the info you will need.

They all would work great for you:
    https://www.ehx.com/browse/compression-sustain
Some are simple and others have more features.
Its up to you to decide what you want to do.

That is my point which would be simplest and give good results?
