Holy crap, I want one of these! How much do the vintage ones usually go for nowadays? There’s one on ebay right now for $900… that seems kind of extreme. My ’08 VG Price Guide has them at around $225. I often will find vintage items priced twice as much as the VG PG, but that’s 4x the Guide. What do ya’ll think, is that normal for the Attack Decay??? There’s no way I would pay that!
However, it is ebay… I recently saw someone trying to sell a 90’s Dunlop TVP-1 for around $700! I saw one sell a week or two ago for $130. haha!

Seriously, they run around $600+ on ebay because there were apparently only a few hundred or so made.
If you want the same effect, you can try the Pigtronics ASDR Attack Sustain. It’ll do everything the Attack Decay and more. Luckily the guys over the DIYstompboxes forum are working on a board that’ll allow you to replace the SAD1024 with an MN3007, which is cheap, still available, and quieter. They initially did it for their DIY ADA flanger but I asked them to produce a board for the SAD1024 replacement on other pedals. Hopefully they’ll be able to do the same for the SAD512 used in early DOD and MXR pedals.

Besides, the Attack Sustain is uggggly. However, if I get desperate, I’ll probably suck it up and get the it. I’ll just have to hold out hope I can find a vintage Attack Decay at a good price or that EHX reissues them. That’s a bummer about the delay ICs… didn’t know that. Definitely something to consider.

Definitely something to consider.I’ve only had a couple come in for repair over the last 10 years. I believe that it’s never been the delay IC yet but that could be because they use the Panasonic chips which seem to have better life to them.

Don’t take this as criticism, but I can’t understand how a pedal’s appearance matters a hill of beans if it does what you want.

If it was a sound I was really going after, it would be a different story. I’ve seen the demos and it seems to make some cool sounds, but I’ve got all the cool-sounding pedals that I really need. But, it would definitely be fun to play around with. It’s hard to justify, to myself, spending $280 on something just to fool around with, anyway but I could maybe talk myself into it, if it didn’t look so blah.

My feelings exactly. If I’m going spend a few hundred bucks on something that won’t be used all that much, then I at least want it to entertain my eyes.
I’m also somewhat prejudice towards boutique pedals. I really don’t like to buy them. The only reason I’m considering the Attack Sustain is because the effect it is based on is so expensive and so rare.

Some of it is overhyped and overpriced. But some of those guys make really great stuff.

I’m prejudiced against any effect that isn’t electro-harmonix
Okay, not entirely. I own a few other brands, but they make up less than 25% of my effects.
The ZVEX lofi-loop junky and the fuzz factory are the only boutique pedals I currently own. Both are insane little boxes that can do some really versatile things. I would recommend them highly.

I remember the auction that had a BIN of 1499.99. I don’t think anyone bought it. The seller said that it was first owned by Adrian Belew, but there was no evidence. However, it was in pristine condition with the original box, manual, and registration card.
