I just bought this afternoon an original 1st generation Small stone Phase shifter off a guy on Craigslist…He had an add up last night Boss sd-1 MIJ and EHX Smallstone phase shifter 40 dollars..I was very surprised when handed me this vintage pedal i got home looked it up sure enough the 1st generation model..It was a good day…I also have a few questions maybe someone could answer…What is the value of this pedal..And also what power supply does it use ..Like an idiot after making sure the pedal worked at the guys house i walked out and left the power supply there…Can i use the same generic power supply for a big muff or does it need to be something special..I dont think there is a battery hook up on this pedal unless you take all the housing apart..Thanks for any help you may have…CC

    Congrats on your score! :thumb:

I used to have a first gen Small Stone, but the one I had made a popping noise when engaged, and I don’t know how to fix that 😥 I sold it so I could afford my Fender Mustang.

    Here’s a soundclip of it: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7106245

Wow, that’s a good score. I’ve come close a couple of times to CL scores like that but either been beaten to the punch or the seller does a quick google and finds out what they’ve got and the price goes up.
FWIW, I think you should be able to use a battery with it. All those old EHX pedals had to be taken apart to get to the battery clip (at least it meant there were no lost battery doors). (You could always go back to your seller and get the power supply :D The PP2 and onespot come with adapters for those pedals too).
    Some good info here: http://www.pedalarea.com/small_stone.htm

And sometimes the popping switch thing can be fixed by just raising the switch a touch, or sticking a pulldown resistor on the input.

    Hello:

I own a second generation EH Small Stone, and also I’ve won a first generation yesterday on eBay. I think the standard 9-volt 100 mA power 1/8″ jack supply will work properly. In fact, I think the current consumption is not too much. I run the 2nd version Small Stone with a power supply block (PCIOKS Baby – 280 mA) with four more pedals (Sparkle Drive, vintage EH Doctor Q, and two delay – hybrid analog/digital and a Boss DD-7) without any problem. So I think the 1st version is the same.

About popping noises do you refer to “pop” listened at the end, that cuts abruptly the phase cycle?. My MXR Phase 90 used to pop when set at long phase cycles. When I first bought the MXR Phase 90 six years ago it did the “pop”, but suddenly one day disappeared. Now, it only does the typical cycle “swoosh”, quite driven but it’s part of its raw sound (which I like too much). The MXR Phase 90 has an internal trim pot which can be adjusted to tailor the phase sweep to get “the phase” sound, but I don’t know if there exists the same for the Small Stone, I suppose (as they’re a 70’s design but with a different concept).

About the Small Stone I own, I only noticed the phase sweep when it’s set to fast cycle and with color switch engaged, but no popping noises at all. I’ve heard the 1st generation is the “finest” of the Small Stone versions, so I think it’ll sound a bit more tamed than later versions and reissues.

Regards and enjoy this little monster.

I too, was wondering about the power supply, that’s how I ended up here. I had been looking for some of my old stuff I haven’t used in years, found an old box with a smallstone phase shifter, soul preacher (compressor/sustainer) and a linear power booster, all Electro Harmonix. Man am I glad the nine volt batterries don’t corrode like D cells do. Never been much of a pedal guy other than a wah wah, but I remember buying just to try them in ’77. Guess I’ll polish them up and put them in a display case, lol.

i think great condition ones that work fine can go for as much as $300.

i also got a great score on my V1 Small Stone, i got it for $20! on eBay, because they sed it wasn’t working correctly (sum times works sometime don’t), but i knew whatever the issue i could fix it, and it turned out to just be a bad footswitch! i happen to have an extra original Carling type replacement laying around (being that i build my own and repair others) and it worked great!

i don’t have a popping issue when turned on/off much, maybe just the first time you use it that session (i just turn it on and of one or two ties before i actualy use it) plus you could add a capacitor to eliminate that.

the only issue i have with it really is the major volume drop, i fix that without modding by putting it into a true bypass loop switch with a booster like the LPB-1, or you could use a channel switcher like the switch blade, and have one channel bypass the effect and the other run into a booster then the Small Stone, then combine the signals back together at the end.

It could be an IC, a power supply problem, or a bad footswitch. You need to have a tech look at it.
