October 23, 2009 at 12:39 am #102554BlueSteelParticipanti’d say get the bmptw, lpb-1, small clone, and soul preacher.
October 23, 2009 at 1:32 am #102559InvaderCCMemberIf i had 320 to spend i guess thats in pounds i would get the BMPTW than the SP which is a main stay for both clean and distorted tones on my board it gives you and extra something that is hard to describe but i have received more compliments on my tone in the last 8 months ive been using it than i ever had before..Then i would get LPB1 which to me is like the original Big muff pi and sovtek Muff it has to be on your board as a primary tone weapon..It is one of those classics that you just have to have ..It has been out since the late 60’s and is still the boost pedal that all others are judged against..Last but not least i would go with the Micro Pog which to me is another great pedal with many uses …
October 23, 2009 at 3:56 am #102564John JMemberthe small clone is really quite a wonderful device, i recently gave mine to the other guitarist in my band because i hadnt much use for it since i got my polychorus. i immediately regretted it, the little guy pumps out some of the most incredible chorusing you will ever hear and it’s cheap and it’s tiny.
the soul preacher is actually my favorite compressor. i had a black finger and i currently have a white finger, they are great for that subtle studio compression but IMO if you are going to get a compressor go with either the white finger (the sensitivity control allows you to get more ‘dynacomp-esque’ tones() or the soul preacher (smaller, cheaper, and you can turn the sensitivity control down for tones fundamentally similar to the white finger). all three have their own personalities and one will probably stand out for you, for me it’s the soul preacher. the black finger sounds divine but it’s incredibly subtle on even the most extreme settings. i would go so far as to call it a ‘non-effect,’ it just helps you sound better.
the others boil down to whether or not you have a use for them… my experience with the micro pog was underwhelming, i missed the added features of the fullsize pog. however, if all you’re after is simple octaves that track perfectly then you can’t do much better. my favorite was running the flanger hoax into the micro pog – no matter how crazy the hoax got, the pog was there adding it’s octaves. super cool, but not quite cool enough for my $200+.
the little big muff was fun but i got rid of it in favor of a NYC full-size; now im thinking on ditching the NYC muff for a tone wicker because that looks like the only big muff a person would ever really need. i found the little big muff to be a bit trebly for my tastes, but back when i had it i was using a twin reverb set for ‘surfy cleans’ (that’s code for crazy treble) and the lbm is a fair bit fuzzier/brighter than the NYC big muff. SO: it’s gone, i don’t miss it much but my friend uses one before a vox 847 wah and it is the best fuzz/wah pairing i have ever heard in my life. jimi and eric can eat their heart out.
the lpb-1 is what it is and you know what’s up with the muff’n so i dont have much to say about them.
anyways, i hope that’s what you were after… one man’s opinion on some boxes you are looking into. hope it helps!
October 23, 2009 at 10:19 am #102575AshjaahsMuffParticipanti think im definatly going to get the Big muff With Tone Wicker, The Small Clone, and im still undecided on the compressor
i say this because when i tried the black finger, it didnt take well to distortion, it almost cut the levels out completely, unless i really turned up the level control on the distortion pedal,
but then its just i spose the black and the white are the same just with FET and tubes making the difference
i had a tube amp i loved the warmth and dynamics of it, and i dont like solid state amps, so maybe the black could be the one, i dont know lol !!!!
maybe i should just get one, if i dont like it, return it and get the other ??
October 23, 2009 at 10:46 am #102576AshjaahsMuffParticipantive just read through these replys again and noted that there are more people saying soul preacher or white finger than the black finger ?
why is this ?
October 23, 2009 at 10:59 am #102578AshjaahsMuffParticipantbeen watching more reviews etc on youtube and with the black finger, i think it fattens up your tone more, but it also makes it more dark / muddy sounding ??
with the white finger, it add’s a bit of brightness / freshness to the guitar ?
anyone agree or am im just talking nonsense ?
October 23, 2009 at 3:16 pm #102592AshjaahsMuffParticipantright i think im going to get the white finger after having listened to several things on youtube and ive let someone else listen to the pedal on the youtube clip and decided between the black and white
i think im going to get the white, and if i dont like it ill sell it
October 23, 2009 at 6:53 pm #102610TenSecondTedMemberi have been playing for many years and always seemed to get by without a compressor at all. I am interested that so many replies recommend the soul preacher. Am I missing out?
October 24, 2009 at 6:56 pm #102652John JMemberit depends, stompbox compressors have their own sound that you may or may not like (because a compressor emphasizes the attack and increases sustain at the expense of dynamics). I’m still convinced that you can decipher dynamics through a comp, though – strings sound differently when you hit them hard vs. when you hit them soft, it’s not just a matter of volume.
my favourite thing about EHX compressors is that they distort just the TINIEST bit, giving it a sound akin to a cranked clean amp on the verge of breaking up. i used to use it to get that sound on my twin reverb, which i only ever turned up past three once. however, i recently traded in my twin for a 50w bassman that can give you ‘that sound’ at a reasonable volume for practice and jamming, and i haven’t used a compressor since.
October 24, 2009 at 10:32 pm #102654julianModeratornone of those would be bad choices, personally I wouldn’t get the clone, but I don’t like chorus
October 25, 2009 at 6:06 am #102660Ned FlandersModeratorIn 15-16 years of playing I’ve had zero need for compressors.
Whatever you get get the BMPTW and the original chasis small clone, the two best pedals IMO.
October 27, 2009 at 7:25 pm #102729BlueSteelParticipantI’ve never used a compressor either. i’ve tried to watch demos of compressors, and when they turn the pedal on, i barely hear a difference.
October 29, 2009 at 10:42 am #102836AshjaahsMuffParticipantive decided on getting
white finger
micro pog
Big Muff Tone Wickeri was thinking about getting the pog/pog2
but i thought i may aswel get the micro first and see how i get on with it and if i enjoy it first instead of using all lot dosh for a pedal i may not use
