So I just built three Photo Eye Expression Pedals for under $25. I use mine with my XO Worm and it works great. Takes very, very little pedalboard space, too. Here’s a link to deviever’s site, where I learned to make them:

Instead of ordering the jacks and clear covers from mouser, I just found the same jack at Allied Electronics, and simply didn’t get the cover (it works fine without it), so I only had to pay shipping once. As for the enclosure, I just bought a 3x2x1 ABS plastic box from RadioShack for $2.29. A little drilling, a little glue, a little soldering, and some stenciling and spray paint, and you get this:

In retrospect, it would have been REALLY cool if I had made the photo eye the eye of the marshmallow stencil. There’s always next time!

Oh, and if you want a good picture to stencil, here:

You don’t even have to resize it!

Oh, at deviever, they say that you need to use a stereo cable, but before you buy one, try a mono cable, it might work just as well. I found that out the hard way.

No, they’re photosensors. When their is sufficient light, it’s like a regular expression pedal. As you cover the sensor, blocking light, it’s like you’re pushing an expression pedal forward. When you completely block it, it’s like an expression pedal all the way forward.

It’s kind of hard to explain. Sorry.

I bought a triple Peep from Devi last year (or the year before?), but it didn’t work with the pedals I had then, I should try again with some new pedals…

It would be interesting if there was a list that said what kind of cable could be used for which effect…
