Freeze

Sound Retainer

Capture a frozen moment and turn it into a tonally unique sonic foundation. The Freeze Sound Retainer delivers infinite sustain of any note or chord at the press of a momentary footswitch. Release the footswitch and you are again sample ready. Three selectable decay rates, including a latch mode, guarantee liquid, smooth tonal transitions. Hook the Freeze up with your favorite pedals for a sonic collage that will be unlike anything you have ever heard. It’s like adding an extra musician to the band.

We are very pleased to inform you that Mike Matthews has been nominated for Vintage Guitar Magazine’s Hall of Fame. The category is “Innovators” and this is an unabashed solicitation for you to cast your vote for Mike, a guy who truly is one of the most innovative characters in the music equipment biz.

  • First to introduce feedback with a phase shifter: Bad Stone
  • First electronic flanger: Electric Mistress
  • First with an analog delay: Memory Man
  • First inexpensive digital delay: 2 Second Digital Delay
  • First to pioneer an electronic looper: the 16 Second Digital Delay
  • First to introduce inexpensive sampling: Instant Replay, then the Super Replay

In Mike’s 45 year history of relentless product innovation, he’s also been responsible for iconic effects pedals like the Big Muff Pi and the POG2 Polyphonic Octave Generator. More recently, he continues to redefine the landscape of effects with products like the Freeze Sustainer, Ravish Sitar Pedal, Superego Synth Engine and the ground-breaking Crying Tone Wah Pedal with no moving parts. Jim James, singer, songwriter, guitarist, for the hard rocking band, My Morning Jacket, shares guitar duties with bandmate Carl Broemel. Both were selected by Rolling Stone magazine to appear on a short list of New Guitar Gods.

The multi-talented James recently picked up an Electro-Harmonix FREEZE and wrote in to say:

“I’m deep in the studio in Bangladesh, in the throes of working on my latest raga. I need something new, some new sort of drone or sustain, and someone hands me the freeze. I capture the sound of a kitten mewing outside of the studio and sustain it indefinitely with the freeze pedal-perfection! I can now raga for hours, or until the end of time- as my freeze pedal will allow me to fuck with the space-time continuum any way I choose. Thanks EH!”

Whether winning Downbeat’s prestigious Critic’s Poll as “Guitarist of the Year” or a Grammy Award for “Best Contemporary Jazz Album,” Bill Frisell is always stretching the boundaries that define contemporary jazz guitar.

His use of effects to shape and shade the timbre of his electric guitar play a large part in creating a sound that is uniquely his own.

This recent photo shows Bill at the Village Vanguard in New York City with his Electro-Harmonix FREEZE Sound Retainer and Micro POG, Polyphonic Octave Generator. The FREEZE is a new addition to Bill’s tone-shaping palette and he had this to say to EHX founder, Mike Matthews, and daughter, Suzi Matthews:

“This Freeze thing is off the scale…a serious musical instrument…already making impossible things possible…really…this is something else!”
