    Hi folks

my name is Rainer and I am very interested in electronic music, vintage computers and the story of all.
Besides, I am playing bass in a band (my only ehx unit is a bassballs)

Years ago, when I was thinking, what I could do with my two DEC PDP-8 computers, I remember that old photograph of Electronic Musci Studio in London, which I found in an synthesizer book. Those two PDP-8 computers controlled a number of electronic tone generators, filters, envelop generators… So I got the idea to reenact parts of this studio.

Two years ago I re-remembered this idea and I started to get any information about the EMS London.
All about Peter Zinovieff, who had many ideas of tone generators and of how to make music with the computer, David Cockerell, who had to do all hardware stuff (interfaces to music hardware, controls,…) and Peter Gorgono who wrote the msuic software MUSYS.
I got in contact with Peter Zinovieff, who liked the idea, but unfortunately he died last year.
As well as Peter Gorgono, who also died last year!

But I still like this idea to let two computers of the 70s control musical hardware of the same time.
(a MIDI interface for a PDP-8 computer was already done)

So maybe David Cockerell wants to help me with my project.
I have two PDP-8s, lots of electronic tone generators and some ideas of soldering, PDP-8s, electronic tone generation and programming.

All I know, that the PDP-8/S was the computer, that was connected with the sound hardware (an interface, an organ tone generator and many other stuff)
On the PDP-8/L the music software MUSYS was running, and this computer controlled the PDP-8/S.
But little more is known about this, no details, i.e. what was the interface for…
I have no idea of how much I can re-build of this computer controlled studio, but the more information I can get, the better!
And I have so many questions about the hardware…!
Maybe someone could get in contact with David Cockerell and may show him my ideas and problems.

thanks to all and all the best

    Rainer

Here are my investigations about the different setups of the sound harware and the PDP-8 computers with some labels, what I know, what is, what I guess and what I don’t know…

1st setup: London, on stage: http://horniger.de/computer/dec/ZinovieffSU1.jpg
    1st setup

    2nd setup: London, boatshouse: http://horniger.de/computer/dec/ZinovieffSU2.jpg
3rd setup: London EMS Studio: http://horniger.de/computer/dec/ZinovieffSU3.jpg
4th setup: London EMS or later Oxfordshire: http://horniger.de/computer/dec/ZinovieffSU3.jpg
