I’m just a hobby player, nothing all that great. Play an old Highway One Tele through a BJ. A bit of the easier Hendrix, some blues, some Waylon and Hank and such. I’ve never owned a pedal in my life – but I’m going to take the plunge. I’m gonna’ give EHX a try first because they seem to be reviewed pretty well, the company story is cool, and they’re different.

I’m asking for suggestions. Don’t want to break the bank and spend more on pedals than I have in the amp and guitar, and I don’t have the patience to build an entire board with half a dozen buttons to stomp anyway. So, what are the “essentials” for something like that ? Seems like the East River Drive or Soul Food would be the way to go – as long as either lets the tone knob cut down the bass to keep the amp from getting gassy.

Anyway – any tips would be appreciated. And Thanks.

EDIT – and I asked this question a couple years ago – before I bought the amp. So just following up, in my cheap a$$ miserly way. Thanks again.

Hi. If you are looking for a dirt pedal, I highly recommend the English Muff’n. It has been discontinued but still available from authorized dealers. No clipping diodes, transistors, or ICs are in the signal path. It ships with a pair of 12AY7 valves, which may be switched out for -X7 or -U7. It’s based on the gain stages and tone stacks of 60s Marshalls with Volume, Gain, Treble, Midrange, and Bass controls. https://www.ehx.com/products/english-muff-n

The Graphic Fuzz has, in my opinion, the best solid state distortion of any pedal. Its name implies a fuzz, but the pedal control is labeled Overdrive. To me it sounds more like an overdrive. It also contains a 6-band EQ, and controls for Overdrive, Dynamics, Sustain, and Volume. The Dynamics control provides attack response to your playing which is often lost in the compression of solid state pedals. https://www.ehx.com/products/graphic-fuzz
