Can anyone help me get close to this sound:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIhQKJ40UHM

The instrument is called the Stylophone, it’s basically a tiny, glitchy synth operated by pressing a metal-tipped stylus onto a metal slide laid out like a piano or keyboard…I dunno if they really took off in the states. They were huge in the UK back in the late sixties and seventies (apparently) but have recently had somewhat of a resurgence.
But hey, I’m getting off topic.
Can anyone recommend any way of getting close to this using a guitar?

I’d think a lot of it would be in technique. . . tapping would probably help quite a bit

I think Julian is right - it’s mostly about attack/decay on an rather heavily distorted signal.

you’d need a good squarewave distortion/fuzz and then something to get the quick attack decay.

i don’t know if the attack/decay dials on the hog would do it.

what you’d really needed would be a circuit breaker, like unplug the guitar chord or even an “on/off”-volume switch!

i’ll fool around with the hog tonight. but good luck with that one! great sound!

the closest i’ve got to that sort of sound (with guitar) was using a Zoom Ultra Fuzz… with both the ‘gate’ and ‘resonance’ up quite high.

why don’t you just buy a Stylophone?
you can get one for less than £10 from Amazon. (i’ve got one; it’s pretty cool!)

what about Devi Ever’s The Bit? it’s supposed to emulate 8-bit games sound quality smile

(in certain settings)

Yamaha 302S -> Crybaby -> Electronic Orange Moon Face -> EHX Stereo Polyphase -> Catalinbread DLS -> F5 Tap Tremolo -> Carl Martin Red Repeat -> EHX SMMH -> George Dennis Mighty Mouse 1x12

Ah this is much is true….but gig wise a stylophone would be demolished in a week.
I might look up the ultra fuzz
