Hey! I am thinking of buying a Flanger Hoax on a good deal. My concerns are :poke: : can it do relatively subtle modulation? I am worried about the lack of a depth knob. Also, does it do both small stone and electric mistress type of sounds? I know it won’t sound the same as either, but…
Any help and advice is welcomed. Thanx very much!

its a great pedal. it can do subtle modulation and i’m assuming it can do stuff similar to small stone and electric mistress sounds.

I received my Flanger Hoax today. Unfortunately, it seems the shop I bought it from failed to send the power supply as well so for now i can’t use it or do anything  . I hope the shop won’t make me any problems with sending me a power supply, and i also hope i won’t have to pay shippment for the power supply as well. Boooo!

that’s strange, the Ps should be in the original box with the pedal…
They should send you the PS with no extra fee, it’s their mistake after all!
good luck!

chev - 20 July 2009 10:55 PM here’s my last experiment with the hoax…and muff’s…

I always thought “I am the only person that makes noise out off a russian Big Muff, a ceb-3 and a dod fx-72, and calls it ‘music’” haha. Nice clip man, right into my mp3 player : D
Ps: I want a Flanger Hoax, but I don’t have enough money. Also I want tons of ehx pedals ‘n’ stuff, but again I can’t afford them :(.

chev - 11 June 2009 08:23 AM This is where all the settings are. It helps a lot at knowing the pedal.
http://acapella.harmony-central.com/showthread.php?t=1044889
Here’s the setting I’m using now and it’s amazing with a Muff!
******************************************
Chorus-like pseudo-Electric Mistress Flanger
blend - 10:00-2:00 2:00
feedback -10:00-12:00 12:00
feedback switch - swept
LIN
mod mode -180 degrees
amount - 10:00
rate - 9:00-10:00 10:00
delay mode -1
invert switch - off
fixed switch - bypass
so glad someone is enjoying my favorite setting on the Flanger Hoax! I have some other ones I will be posting on the Flanger Hoax lounge soon…that blend knob is a very useful feature, you can have an insane modulation going on past 12:00 and back the blend knob off to say 10:00 and the sound is very subtle and “useful” in a more traditional application. PureTube, the designer of the Hoax, and many other pedals is a master of pedal magic!
Also, be sure to check out Fender&EHX4ever;‘s settings in the lounge as well, he is a maestro of EHX insanity!
fixed delay - 3:00
swept switch- swept
swept delay -3:30
******************************************
I’ve took it from someone on the thread link above.
The value in bold are the one I use.
I also found this in there, it’s very useful to note down your settings.

I’m glad you like my clip.
There’s actually a part 2 of that session that is even better IMO but it’s 26min so I couldn’t upload it without ruining the audio quality with extreme compression…i’ll see if there’s a way to upload it somewhere else than soundclip…
You could still get a Small Clone or Stone for cheaper and have some space fx too…
I’ve been trying many other settings…I now use the Chorus setting wich blend nicely with my guitar amps…you should ear the Delay bouncing from my right amp/cabinet…kind of stereo delay with some hoax…! As soon as I start playing my gig I just close my eyes and leave for another dimension…I can’t wait to replace my Boss DD-3 for a XO Deluxe Memory Man!!!

I want one of these so bad!! Ive just got a polychorus though so im gona have to wait a while before I get one, It took me ages to decide which one I was going to get but I went for the poly just because my ibanez chorus was falling to bits. Do you think the flanger hoax will be discontinued soon? that would be just my luck!

I bought a unit in special (199$CDN?) that was suppose to be the last at the shop but few weeks later, guess what? they have a brand new unit in the counter…
I don’t know about the discontinued, it’s a well hided item so they’re should be some left for a while I guess.
The Poly Chorus is a good quality Chorus! I might get one…later…!

I hope it is! mine has yet to hit my door step, It was a tricky choice because I love them both, I play in a very loud band and I thought the poly would be able to give me the most extreme sounds quickly if you know what i mean! but I still look at the hoax and wonder if I made a good choice!! only time will tell I guess.

yeah a lot of stores do that, with large specialty items like the FH they will only carry one at a time in there store, until it sells, then they will reorder a replacement.
it also helps them to push the sale by being able to say “its the last one”
also CHEV….i love the clips, reminds me of the background music in the Silent Hill games, ive always loved there soundtracks.

dolphin.co.uk had the flanger hoax in b stock for 85 pound!!! But it had been an expensive month so I missed out on that!! I wonder if ehx would update the hoax into a smaller box, I love the old style pedals the best!

I have tried my Flanger Hoax on and off the board a few times. The first one was actually faulty so it wasn’t off to a good start. I find it to be too subtle for the most part. I have an MXR Micro Flanger and a Small Stone Phaser. If I want a Flanger I put on the Flanger, and if I want a Phaser I put on the Phaser. The thing about the Flanger Hoax is that it simply cannot do either role with any real authority. It’s always very wishy washy and weak sounding. I think it would be nice to be able to bypass the delay lines so as you could focus in on just the swept phaser and hopefully be able to get a traditional strong phaser effect out of it. It’s just too big, too subtle, too random…how? If you set the swept phaser to give you a “somewhat” strongish phaser sound, ie with feedback up and amount up around 3 o’clock and the blend at 2 or more. Then you can put the delay lines on DC so as to try and keep them out of the way by not having them swept. The positions of the delay lines changes the intensity of the sound so much that a slight movement here or there and the sound is weakened. The short of it is that it is NOT posible to get the sound of a Small Stone from this pedal. If you bypass the phasers and use delay mode 2 or 3 then either the first or second delay line is fixed and the other is swept. You can use this with the blend on full to give you a flanger sound. Don’t expect to be heard when you do this however. If you choose mode 1 or 4 then both delays are swept and you get a sort of flangerish like sound but again it’s still not anything like what an MXR Flanger does. If you put the delay controls at 12 o’clock and everything else off and turn up the rate you can get an interesting ring mod like sound. You can do things to the sound with the delay knobs. Quirky and fun. I don’t find it to be the heinous noise machine people make it out to be. I ran mine into a compressor to even out the volume. People complain about noise but I don’t hear it. It’s not a terrible pedal, it just doesn’t do standard sounds so I don’t find it very useful. Maybe if it was POG2 sized and ran off of 9V and had an output level control, it may win back a few points. The way it is it’s just a little big and non-specific sounding for me.
